Heat is efficiently dissipated from hot spots, making heat pipe heat sinks ideal for use in confined spaces. The combination of heat pipes and heat sinks enables effective heat transfer over greater distances. These components can be extended with a variety of manufacturing elements.

Heat sinks are thermal conductors available in diverse sizes and shapes. They transfer energy in the form of heat to another medium, such as air. Since air has low thermal capacity and absorbs only small amounts of energy, the surface area of the heat sink must be as large as possible to maximize heat dissipation. This effect is enhanced by fins or ribs. Heat sinks are usually made of copper, aluminum, or, in rare cases, silver. Aluminum heat sinks are lightweight, even for larger components, but they don’t always provide optimal thermal conductivity. Copper, while heavier, is more durable and conducts heat much more effectively. However, its high weight can be a drawback in some applications. When combined with heat pipes, both aluminum and copper can be used as interfaces or fin materials to design an optimal heat sink.
